WUS Residents Program
The Wisconsin Urological Society recognizes the need for urology residents to network with, and be mentored by, experienced urologists in the field. To enhance their training, the WUS offers a resident program to all urologists currently enrolled in a Wisconsin Teaching Institution’s urology residents program. The WUS’ yearly resident podium presentations will take place on Saturday and Sunday, March 31 – April 1, during the society’s annual meeting. All urology residents in the state of Wisconsin are encouraged to submit abstracts for presentation. Topics may be clinical or basic science and cover any area in urology. All accepted abstracts are presented to the society during the general session on Saturday and Sunday. Awards will be given to best resident podium presentations from both Milwaukee and Madison.
This year’s WUS meeting will be held March 31 – April 1 at the InterContinental Milwaukee in Milwaukee, WI. All resident presenters will receive complimentary meeting registration, two night’s hotel accommodations and one (1) ticket to the Saturday night Welcome Reception as well as one (1) ticket to the Annual Banquet at Miller Park.
This meeting is a great opportunity to share residency training and research ideas, as well as network with urologists in the state.

Educational Needs & Objectives
Needs Assessment
Urologists require continuing educational enrichment to keep abreast of the developments in the field. Urology is rapidly changing and new medications, chemotherapy, surgical techniques and technology have a great impact on patient care, as well as healthcare economics. Urologists must assimilate this knowledge and make medical decisions for the best intentions of the patient. Often this translation of knowledge is facilitated by academic centers to community urologists. Specifically, urologists must be aware of emerging trends in pediatric urology, robotic surgery, prostate cancer, sexual medicine and infertility, voiding dysfunction and BPH, renal cancer and healthcare socioeconomics.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of the WUS 2012 meeting, attendees should be able to:
- Identify alternative techniques for management of complex orchiopexy in children.
- Recognize benefits of robotic assisted surgery in management of prostate cancer.
- Identify factors that define high-risk prostate cancer.
- Identify limitations of surgery in high-risk prostate cancer.
- Describe the outcome differences between robotic-assisted surgery and open surgery for prostate cancer.
- Integrate principles of robotic surgery and measure to achieve proficiency.
- Describe current status and rationale for PSA screening for prostate cancer.
- Identify symptoms and sequelae of androgen insufficiency in adult males.
- List potential risks of hormone replacement therapy on systemic and urologic diseases.
- Identify best candidates for hormone replacement therapy in adult men.
- Utilize systemic markers in androgen replacement therapy.
- Identify the role of systemic illnesses in development of LUTS.
- Describe the relationship of BPH and LUTS.
- Identify alternative treatments for LUTS/BPH.
- Recognize differences in outcome measures between therapies for LUTS.
- Identify recent advances in chemotherapy options for renal cell cancer.
- Describe stage migration of renal cancer and impact on metastatic disease.
- Identify Wisconsin legislative activity impacting urology.
- Identify mechanisms that can be utilized by urologists to advocate for political action.
